President
Lawrence Tan is President and CEO of a Washington, DC, company in the food and beverage industry and commercial real estate. He was born in Semungen, Sarawak, Malaysia. Sarawak is one of two Malaysian States located on the island of Borneo. The small village in which he was born has nearly disappeared due to rising water levels caused by climate changes. His father came from a family of goldsmiths and emigrated from the Fujian province of China at the age of twelve. His mother was born in Malaysia. As soon as he could walk he became part of the family business - his father became a butcher and trader with the native population in Borneo. Lawrence rose early to deliver the orders, went to school and collected the money after school. He was the only pupil in his village to pass the examination at the end of primary school. He went to Kuching where he continued working and attending school. He graduated from Kuching High School in 1975 and later Green Road Seconday School in 1977. After a year teaching in elementary school, he was employed by Bian Chiang Bank, a subsidiary of a British own financial institution, Morgan Guaranty Trust. He turned down an offer to enter their management track and opted instead to go to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where he received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba at the end of 1983. He financed his entire education by working in the restaurant industry. In 1984 he attended chef schools in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
He moved to Washington, DC in the summer of 1984. He worked as a bank teller and accountant before venturing into his business dream and opening the Straits of Malaya in 1989; the first Malaysian restaurant in Washington, DC. (see http://www.Straitsofmalya.com). The business was successful from the beginning and is well known in the area. While operating the business he earned his Masters in Business Administration, was certified as a Microsoft Network Engineer and also became a Certified licensed Massage Therapist. He continues to be a practicing massage therapist. He has studied Tai Chi for more than twenty years. (see http://www.dragongatemassage.com)
Hope Peace Love Compassion Charity (HPLCC) is the next venture in his life - where he hopes to provide assistance to youth and seniors who do not have the advantage of a family to provide the emotional and financial support to succeed. He hopes to make a little difference in the lives of these children and senior; to bring them a little hope and a little happiness. His family was poor, but the dozen children in his family went on to varied successful careers in business and professionals. He knows from his personal experience the struggles it takes to succeed and that it is not easy to overcome adversity, but it can be done through hard work and perseverance.
